Monterrico (11/15/10-11/17)

Monterrico sunset
There it is, the main thing to do here, watch the sunset. At least during the week it's very quiet and room rates can be half, as is mine at the Atelie del Mar, run by Stig of Finland and Violeta his wife from Guatemala. $30/night gets me a nice room right next to the biggest (and refreshing!) pool in town, wifi, etc. It's also away from what passes as the party side of town, which is a plus for me.

Violeta is an artist who paints on silk and I have to admit I bought one of her works for enough money to screw up my "budget" even more than it already is. And I don't even have a wall to put it on!

in the reserve
Monterrico is a very small town/resort that gets a lot of its identification from the black sand beaches, the nature reserve and the turtle nesting ground. I took an early morning lancha tour of the reserve, which is mostly water/mangroves, but unfortunately didn't see much in the way of wildlife that day. It is very pretty and peaceful, though. I also got a close look at the flatboats that people put their cars on to avoid a time consuming backtracking on the single road in. I haven't made up my mind on that, yet. Either way, it's on to El Salvador tomorrow.
